From the clinic to the sidelines: Helping families stay healthy

Has it been a while since you’ve seen a doctor? Do you have joint pains or a new injury? Would you like to be more active? Perhaps you have questions about general care or health care screenings.
I’m Dr. Dalton Lohsandt, a board-certified family and sports medicine physician with Bothwell Family Medicine. My clinic just crossed its one-year anniversary at Bothwell, and we are accepting new patients to talk about these health issues and more.
I completed medical school and family medicine residency at the University of Missouri-Columbia. I then pursued a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa and served as a team physician for university athletics.
Growing up in a small town in Missouri, I knew I wanted to be back close to home and near family, which brought me to Sedalia. Years ago as a medical student, I worked at Bothwell and enjoyed the people, culture and community. It’s nice to be back in the area and still see many of the same physicians, staff and patients that made a positive impact on me years ago.
As a family medicine physician, I can help you and members of your family keep health on track with annual visits and work together to tackle current health challenges. I see a wide range of family medicine conditions and provide care for diabetes, high blood pressure, weight management, tobacco cessation, acute illness, dermatology procedures, pediatric visits, preventative care and many others.
Having a family medicine physician is essential for maintaining overall health and wellness. We focus on preventive care, routine check-ups, managing chronic conditions and being there for you when health challenges arise . By seeing your family doctor regularly, you build a long-term relationship with someone who understands your health history, lifestyle and specific needs.
This relationship is vital for catching potential health issues early, managing ongoing conditions effectively and ensuring you’re getting the right screenings and vaccinations. Regular visits or annual exams also promote better communication, making it easier for you to ask questions and stay informed about your health, leading to better outcomes over time.
As a sports medicine physician I enjoy helping patients of all ages stay active or get back to what they enjoy doing after an injury. I can help you recover from a broken bone, joint sprain, tendon injury or overuse injuries. In the clinic our team can perform same-day x-rays, casting or splinting and discuss rehab options. When needed, I perform joint injections and have the ability to perform ultrasound-guided injections for more complex areas. If any condition requires further treatment or surgery, I will refer and work closely with your orthopedic surgeon to ensure a smooth transition for your care.
As another school year is starting, you may again see me on the sideline for local high school football Friday nights or in Bothwell’s Saturday morning injury clinic for athletes. From time to time, I’ll be at other high school events and at State Fair Community College basketball games.
I enjoy being involved with athletics and with the community. In April, I helped kick off the Bothwell Foundation’s first men’s health talk in Warsaw that also had a fishing angle called “Docs and Bobbers.” I look forward to doing many events like this in the future and continuing to be a part of the community.
If you need to establish care with a family medicine physician or something is preventing you or your child from getting back in the game, feel free to reach out to the clinic and schedule an appointment. Let’s work together to make Sedalia and the surrounding area healthy and active.
