Bothwell nurse educator honored with MHA Champions of Care award

Megan Elwood, BSN, RN, CEN, nurse residency coordinator and clinical educator at Bothwell Regional Health Center, has been named a 2026 MHA Champions of Care Nurse Champion.

Bothwell Regional Health Center is celebrating one of its own after the Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) recognized Megan Elwood, BSN, RN, CEN, with a 2026 Champions of Care award for her exceptional contributions to nursing education and her lasting impact on patient care across the organization.

Elwood serves as Nurse Residency Coordinator and Clinical Educator at Bothwell, a role she has shaped into a cornerstone of nurse development at the health center. Drawing on years of experience as an emergency department nurse, she brings both clinical expertise and real-world insight to preparing new nurses for the realities of direct patient care.

Recognizing that nursing school alone cannot fully bridge the gap between classroom learning and clinical practice, Elwood has been instrumental in building and sustaining Bothwell’s nurse residency program. The program provides structured mentorship and support to help new graduates develop strong clinical and critical-thinking skills, build confidence and improve retention.

Elwood’s influence extends well beyond individual nurses. By strengthening the entire nursing care team, her work ultimately improves patient outcomes throughout the organization.

Bothwell CEO Lori Wightman said Elwood’s recognition reflects the commitment to excellence that defines Bothwell’s team.

“Megan doesn’t just teach skills, she builds nurses,” Wightman said. “Her work strengthens our entire care team and, by extension, improves the experience for every patient we serve. This award is a reflection of the heart she brings to her work every day.”

MHA’s Champions of Care awards are presented annually during National Hospital Week and National Nurses Week to recognize outstanding contributions by Missouri’s health care professionals.
