Bothwell-University of Missouri Rural Family Medicine Residency celebrates second graduating class

Bothwell Regional Health Center and University of Missouri School of Medicine celebrated the graduation of two resident physicians from the Bothwell-University of Missouri Rural Family Medicine Residency. Dr. ShiAnne Farris and Dr. Logan Stiens completed the three-year program June 13.

The residency began in 2019 after the University of Missouri received a federal grant and selected Bothwell as the first site in the state to implement a rural family medicine residency. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and trains family physicians to serve in rural communities.

Farris and Stiens completed rotations in Sedalia and Columbia in areas including family medicine, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, cardiology and general surgery. They trained under the supervision of Bothwell physicians who serve as residency faculty.

Following graduation, Farris will join the medical team at Bothwell Health Center – Truman Lake in Warsaw where she will provide full-scope family medicine, including preventive visits, chronic disease management, pediatrics, women’s health, prenatal care (excluding deliveries), minor procedures and inpatient hospital care. Stiens will continue his training in a fellowship in medical toxicology at Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta, where he will train with the Georgia Poison Center.

Dr. Misty Todd, residency director and a family medicine and obstetrics physician at Bothwell Cole Camp Clinic, said the second graduating class reflects the program’s continued growth and its mission to strengthen the rural physician pipeline in Missouri.

“Dr. Farris and Dr. Stiens have each brought something meaningful to this program and to the patients they’ve cared for over three years,” Todd said. “Seeing Dr. Farris choose to stay and serve in a rural community like Warsaw is exactly what this residency was designed to make possible. We’re proud of both of them and grateful for the contributions they’ve made here.”

The residency’s capacity is six physicians, with two new residents joining each year. The curriculum includes hands-on experience across multiple specialties, didactic education, procedure training and rotations in hospital and outpatient settings.
