New physicians join Bothwell Rural Family Medicine Residency
Bothwell Regional Health Center and the University of Missouri School of Medicine recently welcomed two new resident physicians to the Bothwell-University of Missouri Rural Family Medicine Residency.
Dr. Hayden Hackman and Dr. Joseph Stegman are the newest additions to the three-year program, which trains family physicians in a rural setting. They will spend their first year training in Sedalia and Columbia, followed by two years based full-time in Sedalia.
Hackman, from Glasgow, Missouri, earned his medical degree from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. He said early experiences with trusted family physicians and a love for anatomy and biology sparked his interest in medicine.
“Bothwell stood out to me because I felt it would be easy to form strong relationships with attending physicians, which creates a better learning environment,” Hackman said. “Being from a small town, I knew living in Sedalia would be something I would enjoy.”
He chose family medicine for its wide scope and the opportunity to work across many specialties. During residency, he plans to gain hands-on experience with procedures and prepare for a future practice that includes obstetric care and care for patients of all ages.
“I am passionate about addressing the obesity epidemic,” he said. “I enjoy learning and teaching about diet and exercise, and I’m excited to combine lifestyle education with new medical treatments to improve patient health.”
Stegman, from Washington, Kansas, earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He said a lifelong interest in science and mentorship experiences helped him realize medicine was the right path.
“I wanted residency training geared toward rural practice with strong obstetrics and procedural experience,” Stegman said. “Bothwell’s full-scope training aligns well with my goals to be the kind of physician who can handle any problem my patients bring.”
With interests in endoscopy, obstetrics and other procedures, Stegman said he hopes to be a trusted physician in a rural Kansas community after residency.
“Access to health care is the issue I have the most experience with, especially in rural areas,” he said. “Specialists or resources might be hours away in the closest city, so I plan to be equipped to help bridge that gap for my future patients.”
Dr. Misty Todd, residency director and a family medicine and obstetrics physician at Bothwell Cole Camp Clinic, said Hackman and Stegman are excellent additions to the program.
“Dr. Hackman and Dr. Stegman bring passion for rural medicine and a desire to make meaningful connections with patients,” Todd said. “They each have unique strengths and a commitment to learning, which fits well with our mission to prepare family physicians to serve rural communities.”
Hackman and Stegman join Dr. ShiAnne Farris, Dr. Logan Stiens, Dr. Jamie Spears and Dr. Gabriel Dudley in residency who are all taking new patients. To make an appointment with a resident physician, call Bothwell Family Medicine Associates at 660.827.2883.
