Meet the Residents

Gabriel Dudley, DO

Gabriel Dudley, DOGrowing up in the small town of Jackson, Missouri, I knew I wanted to settle down in my home state someday. I attended Southeast Missouri State and received a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science. My high school sweetheart and I married before moving to Florida where I completed my master’s degree program in Biomedical Ethics and medical school both at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. When I’m not practicing medicine, I love to hunt, cook meals for large groups and ride my unicycle. I’ve always loved a challenge, and unicycling certainly challenges my athleticism. My wife and I have two children, Adaley and Cale and two dogs, Barley and Charlie.

Why I chose this program
Choosing Bothwell for my residency program was an easy decision, especially after speaking with the other residents in the program. When I was seeking out residency programs, it was important to me to receive individualized training with opportunities for procedures and one-on-one training. The family medicine program in Sedalia is unopposed and everyone here instantly made me feel valued and appreciated.

What I like about Sedalia
I love the hometown feel of Sedalia and it reminds me much of where I grew up in Jackson, Missouri. My family and I take full advantage of the parks and recreational activities that the city offers.

Jamie Spears, MD

Jamie Spears, MDI grew up in rural southeast Kansas and was practically raised in my father’s medical clinic. My passion for family medicine and building relationships with patients grew as I continued my education. I attended Kansas State University and received a bachelor’s degree in Life Science and pursued my medical degree at American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in Sint Maarten. My fiancé and high school sweetheart and I have three dogs, two Australian Shepherds and a chihuahua. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, spending time on trails with the dogs, and putting together puzzles or LEGO sets. Oh, and people often mistake me for Britney Spears’ sister, though we have no relation, sadly.

Why I chose this program
From the get go, it was easy to see the heart that had been put into this program and how much the residents meant to everyone. I chose Bothwell because of the faculty here and the family-based atmosphere. Sedalia’s close-knit community and supportive environment was exactly what I was looking for, and it immediately felt like home.

What I like about Sedalia
I really enjoy Sedalia's friendly, close-knit community. The town has a welcoming feel and plenty of local events that make it easy to connect with others. The relaxed atmosphere and small-town charm make it an ideal place for my family medicine residency.

Hayden Hackman, DO

Hayden Hackman, DO

I was born and raised in Glasgow, Missouri, a rural town about 1 hour northwest of Sedalia. I chose family medicine because of my desire to treat and manage multiple medical conditions across all ages of life while developing long-term, lasting relationships with my patients. Growing up in a rural area, this is the type of medical practice I grew up around and has always been the type of practice I hope to achieve. Within the field of family medicine, I hope to practice full-scope medicine working with all age groups from pediatrics to the elderly as well as doing obstetrics and as many small procedures as possible. Some of my favorite things to treat/manage include diabetes, obesity, and lifestyle management such as working with patients to develop lifelong habits of good diet and exercise to help improve their lives in ways outside of medicines.

Why I chose this program

I chose the Bothwell Rural Family Medicine residency because I felt it matched my goals and provided the perfect training for what I aspire to be as a family medicine physician. The opportunity for procedural training was one of the main driving factors. I also liked the small size of the program allowing for closer relationships with fellow residents and our attending physicians.

Joseph Stegman, MD

Joseph Stegman, MD

I have lived in several parts of small-town Kansas for most of my life. Growing up rural, I feel I can connect with patients beyond a superficial level and can also help navigate the challenge of medicine in more resource-limited settings. I chose family medicine because I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. I have a natural curiosity about life and medicine, so I was drawn toward a specialty that wouldn’t limit me to one particular area of medicine. I also had some great mentors during my medical education who helped guide me along the path. I was inspired by their connections to a wide spectrum of patients ranging from babies to the elderly. I would like to be the person someone first thinks of to reach out to when they say “I need to go to the doctor.”

Why I chose this program

I chose this program because I grew up in rural Kansas, so I knew I wanted residency training with a focus on that area. Being able to train in a rural area in an environment similar to where I would like to one day practice is icing on the cake. I also was looking for a program that would allow me to get more hands-on experience with obstetrics and other procedures. Remaining relatively close to my family was another thing that was important to me.

Kusum Choudhary, MD

Dr. Choudhary professional photo in a white coatI grew up in a small rural town near the India-Pakistan border and was inspired to pursue medicine after losing my younger sister to a preventable illness. I completed my medical education in India and spent more than 18 years serving patients through clinical practice and public health programs, including more than a decade as an OB/GYN with the Punjab government health care system, caring primarily for rural and underserved communities. My husband and I are raising a blended family of four children, and outside of medicine, I enjoy dancing, cooking and spending time with family.

Why I chose this program

My years caring for patients in resource-limited settings strengthened my passion for comprehensive, community-based care and led me to pursue family medicine. I chose the Bothwell-University of Missouri Rural Family Medicine Residency for its commitment to rural health care, full-spectrum care and a supportive learning environment — especially its emphasis on community service, continuity of care and family medicine with obstetrics.

I grew up in Adrian, a rural town in western Missouri about an hour south of Kansas City. I chose to go into family medicine to be able to treat people in all age groups and across multiple disciplines of medicine. Since I grew up in a very rural area, I wanted to be able to take my blend of perspective and expertise to rural and underserved areas to provide the people there with the best care I can give them.

Why I chose this program

I chose the Bothwell Family Medicine Program because it felt like a perfect fit for me after speaking with several of the current residents and faculty members. The program will allow me to gain experience in a wide variety of treatments and procedures, helping me to become the well-rounded and prepared physician I want to be for patients in rural Missouri.
